Tales from the Loop VFX Breakdown by Rodeo FX

Rodeo FX, One of the distinct joys of doing the visual effects for Amazon’s new show Tales from the Loop was turning stunning artwork into realistically animated 3D assets and unique environments. The nostalgic, neo-futuristic (it takes place in an alternate version of the late 1980s) is based on Swedish artist Simon Stålenhag’s award-winning artbook of the same name. We had the honour of being the lead vendor for all eight episodes of Tales from the Loop.

We developed a range of assets including three moving robots, one static robot and a mechanical hand as well as several environments both full and enhanced. We helped bring Stålenhag’s paintings to life, combining visions of rural Sweden with sometimes mundane and scrappy sci-fi elements.

The shots contained many complex elements, some up to two minutes, playing out in a slow and contemplative fashion on screen. In the end, we had over 700 shots for two hours of screen time, a new record for Rodeo FX.
