The Current War VFX Breakdown by BlueBolt

The Current War charts the rivalry between electricity titans Thomas Edison, and partners George Westinghouse and Nikola Tesla, to develop an electrical standard that would power the modern world. It is directed by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon and stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Nicholas Hoult and Tom Holland.

The VFX requirements throughout the project called upon a close collaboration between BlueBolt, the VFX Supervisor and the Director. The majority of our work was helping to recreate both Menlo Park Laboratory and Menlo Park House, a key location where Edison spent most of his time during the War of the Currents.

Environmental work was key for these locations. Using green screens at the chosen location, BlueBolt created extensive DMP environments to recreate the Menlo Park grounds, with 3D assisting to extend the famous laboratory. To help bring these locations to life, we added falling snow for the winter periods, as well as 2D elements of various workers and staff members wondering across the grounds.

This environmental work also played a key part in the Niagara Falls scenes. Combining green screen plates shot for purpose along with additional footage of the Falls, BlueBolt were able to recreate this stunning location. Images courtesy of The Weinstein Company.
