Love, Death & Robots (stylized as LOVE DEATH + ROBOTS) is an American animated anthology web television series on Netflix. The 18-episode first season was released on March 15, 2019. The series is produced by Joshua Donen, David Fincher, Jennifer Miller, and Tim Miller. Each episode was animated by different crews from a range of countries. The series is a re-imagining of Fincher and Miller’s long in-development reboot of the 1981 animated science fiction film Heavy Metal.

The cast includes Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Gary Cole, Chris Parnell, Omid Abtahi, John DiMaggio, Christine Adams, Josh Brener, Jill Talley, Hakeem Kae-Kazim, Nolan North, Elaine Tan, Aaron Himelstein, Samira Wiley, Stefan Kapičić, and Topher Grace, with Grace and Winstead appearing in live-action roles, rather than animated.

In June 2019, Netflix renewed the series for a second season.

Love, Death & Robots VFX by Axis Studios

Axis Studios, Created by Tim Miller and David Fincher, Netflix’s Love, Death, and Robots (LDR) is an 18-part animated series of shorts, showcasing the work of multiple animation studios. With each story non-conjunctive to the next, every episode portrays a unique narrative, differing aesthetic themes, and a broad range of creative styles. Axis Studios were presented with the opportunity to create an episode—directing, animating, and producing the sci-fi thriller, Helping Hand.

Adapted from Claudine Griggs’ short story of the same name, the episode uses visually stunning CG to bring the industrial, yet futuristic setting of Earth’s orbit to life. Axis Studios set out with a mission to push the graphical capabilities of their creative team, producing their—self-described—most photo-real human to date.

Watch these behind the scenes videos to find out how Axis employed a host of creative and technological solutions to create photo-realism whilst illustrating an artistic signature.
